Embracing Religion: Changing Your Life or Continuing Your Journey?
Many of us are born into a religion, a tradition passed down through generations. However, not all transitions from one religious path to another signal a dramatic change in life. In this article, we will explore how embracing a new religion, whether through baptism or conversion, can affect one’s life while also discussing the importance of self-discipline and the evolution from religion to spirituality.
When Religion Becomes More Than a Birthright
Unlike some individuals who join a religious organization, most of us are not "converted" but rather follow the faith of our parents. This can lead to a natural progression or a significant life change. In the words of our author, though one needs to repent and confess sins, true believers often experience a transformation, becoming a “New Creation.”
“Not really. I had to repent and confess my sins. God did the cleaning of me up. I was a New Creation in Christ.” This quote encapsulates the essence of religious transformation that involves more than just joining a sect—it’s about personal and spiritual cleansing.
Gradual Changes in Religious Life
The author also acknowledges that while there is no pressure to change, certain habits and behaviors may evolve as one learns more about the religion. “Mm… yes and no. Which is to say my life has changed as I have learned more.” This gradual change does not imply a sudden, dramatic overhaul, but rather a continuous journey of understanding and adaptation.
It is a common misconception that one must radically change their life to embrace a new religion. The author points out, “Most of us are born into a religion. We don't choose our religion but rather follow the religion of our parents.” Therefore, the transition to a new faith is often more about growth and self-awareness rather than a complete overhaul.
Transitioning to Spirituality
Embracing a religion is not the end goal; it’s the beginning of a journey towards spirituality. “It is like a kindergarten it teaches us the ABC of God. All religions are good and we must believe in religion. We don't even need to change our religion but we must understand that if we want to go forward on this path we must evolve from religion to spirituality.”
Religion provides a framework, while spirituality offers a deeper connection. Like moving from kindergarten to university, one grows and learns more as they advance on this path.
Personal Experiences of Religious Growth
The author shares their personal journey, growing up Lutheran but later having associations with seven different religions. Throughout these changes, they remained involved in various religious activities and teaching, aligning their behaviors with the principles they followed.
“I grew up Lutheran… I recall telling my mom when I was 16 that I didn’t know that much but I did know I was male, was her son, and was Lutheran… ha ha. She smiled. I’m 72 now and have been associated with a total of seven religions/denominations through the years.”
Experiences like these demonstrate the adaptability and flexibility many individuals exhibit when embracing new religious paths. It is a natural progression rather than a radical shift.
Why Changing Your Life Can Be Beneficial
Even if the change from one religion to another is gradual or rooted in personal evolution, it often leads to positive outcomes, such as increased self-discipline. “Several I was very involved in men’s groups, church boards, prison ministries, church planting, etc… and one took an anti-alcohol stance which I agreed to align my behaviors with.”
“I even taught the doctrines of several of these denominations much like I would teach my employer’s stances on topics. I felt I was a loyal employee/participant and felt there was great utility in aligning my behaviors with that outreach again just like with an employer and their product or service.”
Self-discipline, a crucial life skill, is often a result of these religious involvements. “When I look at going to college or entering the military, I see the tremendous benefits I and others accrue by learning self-discipline. My 3rd son dropped out of college, went into active Army duty in Afghanistan, and returned to college. He told me later that college was ‘a breeze’ when he returned since he had all the added self-discipline—even more than needed in college, and now his career is accelerated too as a result.”
So, changing your life, whether through religious transition or other means, is not just a one-time event but an ongoing process that shapes your character and enhances your abilities. “Changing your life is most often a very needed and good thing even if only temporarily. And that is because self-discipline—being able to deliberately change and adapt—is a highly valuable life skill.”
Conclusion
Whether transitioning to a new religion or evolving from one to another, the journey is about growth, self-discipline, and a deeper connection with the divine. It is a continuous process of learning and adapting, shaping one’s life in meaningful and positive ways.
