External reviews and internal investigations often identify issues such as procedural flaws, inadequate training, or psychological screening needs, leading to necessary improvements.

In contrast, when a Black individual is shot by a police officer, the media response and public reaction are often more polarized. Even in cases where the suspect is known to be belligerent and a repeat offender, there are massive protests and sometimes riots. Despite these high-profile events, comprehensive investigations by the US Justice Department usually show that the shootings were justified.

Racial Disparities in Criminal Activity

Racial disparities in criminal activity contribute to the higher incidence of police shootings involving Black individuals. According to recent statistics, Black people commit a disproportionate number of violent crimes. For example, 54% of all murders are committed by Black individuals, which is a striking statistic considering that they make up only 13% of the population. Other violent crimes also show a similar trend, with Blacks committing far more violent crimes against White people than the reverse. Furthermore, it is alarming that Blacks are more likely to be killed by police officers, often because they are responding to violent incidents involving Black males between 17 and 30 years old.

Examining the data more deeply, we find that the vast majority of violence is committed by inner-city gangs, mostly against other gang members. This reality underscores that these shootings are often part of a violent environment rather than isolated incidents.

Keeping calm, following instructions, and maintaining a professional demeanor is key to avoiding unnecessary confrontations with law enforcement.
