Impact of Mental Health and Mental Illness on Life
How Has Mental Health or Mental Illness Affected Your Life?
Mental well-being and mental illness can have a profound impact on a person's life. Mental well-being concerns encompass our emotional, mental, and social well-being and influence how we think, feel, and act. On the other hand, a mental illness is a condition that can affect a person's thinking and behavior, often causing significant impediments in their lifestyle.
Mental Health and Mental Illness in Society
Mental health and mental illness do not discriminate. These conditions can affect individuals of all ages, races, and sexual orientations. They can be caused by a wide variety of factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, life experiences, and injury.
The effects of mental health conditions can be far-reaching, affecting physical health, relationships, work or school performance, and overall quality of life. Individuals with mental illness are more prone to experience homelessness, unemployment, and substance abuse. They are also at a heightened risk of suicide.
However, it is important to note that individuals with mental illness can lead full and fulfilling lives. With proper treatment and support, many can manage their symptoms and achieve their goals.
Personal Experience: My Journey with Mental Health
Mental health and mental illness have significantly impacted my life. They have robbed me of my ability to think clearly and hindered my ability to take constructive criticism without personal attacks. When I was younger, I had very explosive temper tantrums, which were so frequent that I was in and out of psychologists' offices from the age of seven.
I have tried various ways to cope over the years. Early on, I became obsessed with certain cartoons and TV shows. In my 20s, I developed an alcohol abuse problem. In more recent years, mental illness has held me back by making me second-guess everything I do.
I often want to live for myself a bit more but never feel like I can because I always think I'm letting someone down. I constantly feel the need to please others, even if it means changing myself to be more 'acceptable,' even if I resent it. It has taken years to figure out exactly what has been going on with me. Even now, I can't always tell what's happening.
Consciously, I know I'm wasting time, but staying consistent is another matter entirely. Mental illness has, in many ways, ruined my life.
Seeking Help and Support
