Group discussions (GDs) can be challenging, especially for those who struggle with public speaking and self-confidence. Personal experiences have shown that consistent practice and knowledge acquisition can significantly enhance one's ability to participate effectively in these discussions.
Understanding the Importance of Group Discussions
Group discussions are essential for developing communication skills, critical thinking, and teamwork. Once you become accustomed to participating in GDs, you can assess your strengths and identify areas for improvement. Gosling, et al. (2008) emphasize that individual skill-sets vary, and understanding one's unique abilities helps in maximizing effectiveness during GDs. These discussions can be likened to how a host virus builds up a defense mechanism against different antiviruses, adapting to various challenges.
Personal Experience: Overcoming Public Speaking Fears
My journey of improving self-confidence in group discussions was a long and challenging one. I was highly underconfident in public speaking, a common fear among many individuals. During my school years, I avoided participating in debates and group discussions. My stage fear was so severe that I could not utter a single word during group discussions. This situation was discouraging and frustrating.
During my free time after completing my studies, I decided to read newspapers as a way to stay engaged. My father encouraged me to read Hindi newspapers, which gradually evolved into the English editions like the Times of India and the Indian Express. This habit of reading newspapers not only kept me informed but also helped me expand my vocabulary and knowledge. One of my friends introduced me to Quora, which further enhanced my ability to express opinions and engage in discussions.
Strategies for Improvement
I learned three key strategies that significantly improved my confidence and performance in group discussions:
Adequate Knowledge is the Foundation
Reading extensively is crucial for building confidence. The more you know about a topic, the more comfortable you will feel speaking about it. Consistent reading can help you stay informed and prepared. Engage with various types of content, such as newspapers, journals, and online articles. Knowledge not only builds confidence but also equips you with the necessary information to make informed contributions.
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
No matter how much you read, you won't improve unless you step out of your comfort zone. Seize every opportunity to participate in GDs and discussions. Embrace challenges, no matter how daunting they may seem. Gradually, you will find that your confidence increases with each successful contribution.
Analyze and Express Your Own Opinion
Reading doesn't just help you expand your knowledge; it also helps you form and express your own opinions. As you gain more knowledge, start to analyze the information you read. Develop your own perspective and share it with others. This not only strengthens your confidence but also enhances your ability to engage in meaningful discussions.
My experience of representing the Electronics department in a debate and doing exceptionally well is a testament to the power of these strategies. Even though I may occasionally feel like a beginner, every opportunity I get to speak is a step towards becoming more confident and knowledgeable.
Remember, everyone faces challenges with public speaking and self-confidence. The key is to practice consistently and never lose sight of your goals.
