I am so sorry this happened to you. My mom was not only my mom but also my best friend. I cannot imagine you going through this. If you have experienced abuse, neglect, or an emotionally traumatic childhood, it is completely normal to feel resentment and a lack of affection towards your mother. It is essential to recognize that you do not have to love anyone, including family members, and this sentiment can be mutual. An adult, like yourself, is not obligated to have a loving and supportive relationship with their mother. However, if you were previously a child who was unappreciative or disrespectful, your mother may be hurt and may not necessarily want to maintain a close relationship with you.

Taking Distance for Emotional Healing

It sounds like you should consider creating more space and distance from your mother. If you do not enjoy spending time with her, it might be best to limit your interactions or even consider moving away. Distance often helps in improving strained family relationships and can provide the necessary space for emotional healing on both sides.

Learning from Others' Experiences

Depending on the person and the situation, it is possible to have an unconditional love for your mother. For instance, I love mine unconditionally because she is one of the kindest and most caring people I know. Conversely, if she simply forgot to do something for you, this is not a reason to hate her, as she still gave you life and raised you well. However, it is not healthy to hate people, especially your mother, as she has a unique and irreplaceable role in your life.

Understanding that others may have different feelings and experiences is important. Some, like myself, have a strong and loving relationship with their mothers. However, it is essential to acknowledge and accept that feelings of hate or resentment are valid and can be a part of one's emotional journey.
