Is It Too Late to Start Fencing at 20 Years Old?
Fencing is a sport that can be enjoyed and pursued successfully by individuals of all ages, including those who start later in life. The common misconception that you are too old to begin is debunked by the numerous examples of enthusiasts who took up fencing in their mid to late twenties and found immense enjoyment and success.
The Pros and Cons of Starting at 20
Starting to fence at 20 years old can provide several advantages due to physical maturity and the ability to learn quickly. Moreover, many fencing communities are welcoming to newcomers, regardless of age. This inclusivity encourages individuals to explore the sport without fear of judgment. Additionally, at this age, you can grasp complex techniques faster, which is beneficial for both recreational and competitive players.
Personal Insights from a Fencing Journey
Having started my fencing journey at the age of 26, I wish I had begun much earlier. As a competitor, my journey began at 28, and within two years, I earned my ratings. As an instructor, I've had students ranging from 11 to 68 years old, demonstrating that fencing is accessible to everyone. At 19, it is still a good age to start. Whether you are just looking to have fun or compete at a high level, the answer is a resounding no. Just turn off your computer, get some comfy pants, good shoes, and learn to fence!
Chasing Olympic Dreams: Realities and Possibilities
Starting at 19 with aspirations of reaching the Olympic level involves a myriad of factors, including your athletic ability, dedication, and luck. It is a long and challenging path that requires a unique combination of these elements. However, for most other levels of participation—from local competitions to national championships—you can begin at any age. In my case, I started fencing at age 54, well past the possibility of competing in the Olympics. By the time I was 70, I managed to make the US National Team for VETS, a classification for fencers over 40 years old, based on the FIE (Fédération Internationale d'Escrime) regulations. I even placed third at a World Championship in Debrecen, Hungary, where I was ranked third in the world in the Vet70 epee category and first in the US.
While competing at the Olympic level is a long and challenging journey, it is still possible to achieve success at various levels. However, it takes years of dedicated practice and continuous improvement. So, if you're passionate about fencing, start now and keep pushing yourself.
Key Takeaways:
