Throughout the years, leadership has taught me that the decisions we make reflect our goals and the meaning of our lives. When your vision is clear, every action is guided by it. There is less room for doubt when you have a strong, clear vision. However, it is the role of your mind to guide you, and it is essential to question whether your mind is leading you or if you are following its lead.

Trusting Your Instincts and Critical Thinking

To make better decisions, trust in yourself and leverage both intuition and critical thinking. Intuition is valuable for quick decisions, but decisions that require long-term planning and a deeper understanding of various outcomes should be approached with a critical mindset. It is through this process of contemplation that we can discern the long-term consequences of our choices.

The Importance of Responsibility and Reflection

Every decision carries a responsibility. Whether good or bad, it is our duty to act accordingly. If you made a mistake, it is vital to take steps to correct it. Learning from our mistakes and improving is part of the journey. It's also important to acknowledge that no decision is ever the ultimate "right" decision; we strive to make the "best" decision possible given the circumstances. Even the best decisions can have downsides, emphasizing the value in making high-level, strategic decisions that offer the most positive outcomes.

A business leader must consider core elements like the return on investment when making high-level decisions. This approach can be applied across various contexts—from personal to professional realms. For example, when assessing the impact of terminating a friendship, one must evaluate the gains and losses associated with the situation. Was this person a support system through tough times? Did they contribute positively to your life? These questions can help you make informed choices based on objective criteria rather than purely subjective feelings.

While feelings and personal experiences play a significant role, they should not be the sole measure of reality. It is essential to strike a balance between emotional and rational perspectives. As a CEO nearing the end of my tenure, I can attest to the wisdom of trusting my instincts and reviewing all available data before making decisions. This ensures that we remain accountable and committed to taking corrective actions when needed.
