Reflections on My First Jobs: Lessons Learned and Stories Shared

Ever since my early days, I have had the fortune of working in various roles, each contributing uniquely to my personal and professional growth. From elementary tasks to more complex responsibilities, my first jobs have been the stepping stones of my career journey. Here are some of the stories behind my first jobs.

First Job as a Receptionist

My first job as a receptionist at a dentist's office was an unforgettable experience. I owe this opportunity to my dad's best friend, who is himself a dentist. It wasn't just a casual gig; I am still there and even more sad to say, I am leaving this job next month. But the tenure has been nothing short of a blessing. It allowed me to meet some of the most wonderful friends and even paved the way for ongoing job stability.

During my school days, my parents expected me to help around the house and focus on my studies. Once I graduated, I was introduced to a unique and wonderful opportunity. The company even provided me with the most wonderful lifelong friends. This job was much more than just a place to earn a living; it provided a network and a community that helped shape my early adult years.

News Delivery

Amid the 1950s, I spent a year delivering city papers, a traditional yet essential aspect of the community. On my own bicycle, I covered my district diligently. My district manager, Bert Sakai, was one of the best people I ever encountered in the workplace. His mentorship and guidance were instrumental in shaping my young career.

Electronics Assembly: 14 and Under

My experience at a factory involved bonding wires onto ICs. This job had to be one of the earliest illustrations of child labor being allowed. A school recruiter appeared at my high school and encouraged kids to work in the factory. At just 14, I joined in and managed to get the job. The experience was productive and educational, offering insights into the technical world that would later fuel my career interests.

Library Assistant

One of the most enriching experiences for me was my job as a library assistant during my high school years. I applied for and received the role and continued to work there until I graduated. The role not only paid but also helped with my personal development. The book-loving head librarian presented me with an invaluable gift—a dictionary. I became more conscientious about spelling and accuracy, realizing the importance of these skills in any job, especially before the advent of spell-check tools.

Tutoring

Even earlier in my life, when I was in Grade 8, I embarked on my first formal tutoring role. Working with younger students who were in Grade 2 and below was both a challenge and a rewarding experience. Tutoring required patience, understanding, and an advanced grasp of the subjects, which I developed over the course of the academic year.

Full-Time Employment

After high school, I started working as a tire changer, which was the first job I did on my own without any external encouragement. I walked into a tire shop and applied for the job. It was a role that many might perceive as menial, but it taught me valuable work ethic and customer service skills.

Internship to Full-Time Role

A pivotal moment in my career journey was when my first job started as an internship. A professor at the university informed me about an internship opportunity in my hometown. After graduating, I was converted to a full-time employee, and this experience helped me build my professional reputation and confidence.

Carls Jr. Internship

Final mention of my job history includes a memorable stint briefly working at a Carls Jr. branded new mall restaurant in 1980. I was available to work full-time at any hour, which gave me the flexibility to pursue other interests and develop soft skills in a fast-paced environment.

Reflecting on these early job experiences, it is clear that each one has shaped who I am today. From helping with deliveries to bonding wires onto ICs, and working as a tutor, they have all equipped me with the skills and lessons necessary to succeed in my current career.
