What Excites You the Most About Engineering: A Career Journey
My passion for engineering has been a constant throughout my life. It's not just a profession but a way of looking at the world, filled with endless possibilities and opportunities. Everything in the modern world that isn't naturally occurring has been designed and engineered by talented individuals. From roadways to electronics, buildings to chemicals, the applications are vast and diverse. Engineers are the architects of these intricate and essential creations.
Engineering: A Unique Profession
As an engineer, one of the most exciting aspects of my career is the fact that I am always working on something that hasn't been done before. From conducting specialized tests and analyzing failures to writing original reports, each project presents an opportunity to push the boundaries of what is possible. The satisfaction comes from knowing that the work I do reflects my personal input and contributes to the greater good in tangible ways.
For example, I had the privilege of collaborating with companies developing medical ultrasound equipment. This involved overseeing the creation of components that met their specific requirements. This process is an excellent illustration of how engineers can use their creativity to address real-world challenges. Such work is not only rewarding but also has a profound impact on people's lives.
A Five-Decade Career in Engineering
I spent my entire professional life as an electronic engineer, mostly in a design engineering role. In addition, I contributed to product definition, particularly within the marketing department. Over the years, I had the opportunity to travel the world and meet with potential customers to understand their needs better. My role as an individual contributor allowed me to select my own projects, which was incredibly fulfilling. One of my most notable achievements was developing avionics electronics for entertainment and medical applications.
The Inspiration: Discovery and Nat Geo
The journey to engineering began with a deep-seated inspiration that came from watching Discovery and National Geographic programs as a child. Shows like Big, Bigger, and Biggest, Extreme Engineering, and Mega Structures left a lasting impression on me. These programs not only showcased the intricacies of engineering but also demonstrated the sheer scale and impact of such projects. They sparked a genuine desire to be part of this work.
Despite the prevailing trend at the time of most young adults opting for computer science or electronics, I was determined to follow my passion for mechanical engineering. The inspiration from these programs and the belief that I could contribute to mammoth-scale projects eventually led me to pursue this path. Today, as I reflect on my career, I can say with pride that I have realized my dreams of being part of teams that engineer and execute such ambitious projects.
Engineering is not just a job; it is a calling. It is a discipline that combines creativity, problem-solving, and a deep sense of accomplishment. If you have a passion for making the world a better place, engineering might just be the perfect journey for you.
